semaglutide

Semaglutide

starting at $248 /mo

Why is Semaglutide getting so popular right now?

Because it works. 92% members have achieved lasting weight loss.

Demand for weight loss medicines is skyrocketing since their efficacy has been demonstrated by studies and positive outcomes shared by celebrities and influencers on social media platforms.

This hype has started with Ozempic, medicine that the FDA initially approved for treatment of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). Even though Ozempic is not approved as a weight loss medicine it still remains very popular as such.

This has led to shortages, misuse of what is left available on the market and appearance of counterfeit medications.

In this article we will discuss Ozempic alternatives and finding the most suitable treatment for efficient weight loss.

Top 5 Ozempic Alternatives for Weight Loss

Semaglutide, an active ingredient in Ozempic, is widely used as an off-label drug for weight loss since it optimizes metabolism by promoting satiety and helps maintain the desired weight once the goal is achieved. Coupled with healthy lifestyle changes it can lead to significant weight loss. However, Semaglutide’s side effect profile and price ($935 without insurance coverage) might not be suitable for everyone.

Luckily, there are plenty of alternatives to choose from. Here are the top 5 Ozempic alternatives for weight loss:

Mounjaro

T2D treatment Mounjaro proves to be more effective for weight loss than Ozempic. Mounjaro’s active ingredient Tirzepatide is a dual agonist for the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptors that promote satiety, breakdown of fat and reduction of cravings. Patients treated with Mounjaro experience 26.6% weight loss thanks to their combined activity. Mounjaro has similar side effects to Ozempic.

Wegovy

In June 2021 Wegovy was approved by the FDA as a medication for weight loss treatment of obese (BMI≥30) or overweight (BMI≥27) adults with at least one weight-related condition. In March 2024 the FDA approved Wegovy as a treatment to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in overweight or obese adults. Wegovy contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic but Wegovy’s maximum dose is higher which gives it a slight advantage when considering its effectiveness.

Zepbound

Zepbound gained FDA approval in November 2023 as a weight loss medicine. Zepbound’s active ingredient is the same as in Mounjaro, Tirzepatide. These medications have the same mechanism of action, side effects profile and contraindications, but clinical trials for these two drugs are focused on different areas of effectiveness. Zepbound shows the best results if combined with appropriate diet and exercise.

Trulicity

Trulicity is the FDA approved drug for treatment of T2D and associated heart conditions whose effects are dose-related. Its active substance is dulaglutide which can help to lose weight but not to the same extent as Ozempic. Dulaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist as Semaglutide, but they differ in structure, pharmacokinetics and clinical effects. Ozempic is superior to Trulicity in terms of improving glycaemic control and reducing body weight.

Rybelsus

Rybelsus is the FDA approved treatment for T2D. Rybelsus, Ozempic and Wegovy are different brand names for the same active ingredient (Semaglutide). Rybelsus has a different dosage form and route of administration compared to Ozempic and Wegovy. While Ozempic and Wegovy are supplied as injection pens applied once a week, Rybelsus comes as tablets that should be taken daily.

In general, oral administration is preferable route of administration due to:

  • Less complex handling
  • Easier administration
  • Painlessness.
